league east division title for the first time ever. thanks for joining us tonight. every shawn yancy. >> i'm will thomas in for brian. the celebration in full swing at the ballpark, more on that in just a moment from scott smith, our sports director, but fox 5's bob barnard starts us off with fan reaction outside the park. bob, take it away. >> reporter: there is some serious natitude here, we. look at shirts. they've already been printed and sold. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: let me talk to this man. this is brian from washington d.c. how you feeling right now? >> right, thank you. >> reporter: what is that like in there? >> overwhelming. it was great to see them win this national title. >> reporter: this happened a little bit in an anti-climactic way because the nats found out and all their fans at around

9:45 when the pittsburgh pirates up in pittsburgh beat the atlanta braves. so with that the nats became the national league east champions. here, this is from masn what it looked like inside. the place went nuts. it was between the top and bottom of the 9th inning here and the nats are down 2-0 at the point, but because the braves lost in pittsburgh the nats are nl east champs. take a look at these people, going crazy still. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: let me ask this gentleman over here, sir, tell me how did you get this shirt so quickly? >> the minute that the nats clinched because of atlanta losing they cleaned out all the old shirts from the store. they put these on the. they put out the hats and the shirts. >> reporter: didn't see the hats. >> it was ready to go. >> nl east champions 2012 washington nationals! >> reporter: anybody here who has been here a long time? how long you been here?

>> we've been here since going to nats games since '05 but not before that. >> reporter: anybody in d.c. for 30 years or so? >> right here. grew up an oriole fan rockville nats. right now it's our time. we're going to take it. >> reporter: i believe what i heard them announce that was we have like home ballpark advantage, right? we're the no. 1 seed or whatever you say? >> with the loss of the giants today, with the win, that means the giants can't take over and we're assured the second seed at least. >> reporter: but i thought i heard anyway we got two more games. >> we still have two more games. >> reporter: right. two more games, but they're in the playoffs. [ cheering and applause ] >> let's go nats! let's go nats! >> reporter: i tell you what. hard to hear you, will, but let me send it back into you,

pandemonium, serious natitude here in southeast washington. s >> you're doing a great job. a lot of people are saying all over facebook tonight thank you, pirates. our coverage continues now. >> let's get right to fox 5 sport director scott smith live inside nationals ballpark. i know you've been making your way over to the camera. did you have a chance to talk to any of the players themselves tonight? >> reporter: well, the players are on the field as we speak, the celebration started in the locker room, but they wanted to share it with the packed house here at nationals park of the in fact, bryce harper runs out of the dugout and threw his goggles up in the air. as you see, the celebration underway from the infield here at nationals park. it's quite the celebration as you might imagine. it took game 160, but it's a franchise 180. three years ago the franchise was the worst team in baseball. tonight they're celebrating an

nl east division title. jayson werth here to my left, a big part of the reason why against his former squad, the phillies, as he embraces his children on the field, gives them a loving kiss and the fans right behind him cheering him on. getting a great look what the this team has been able to do. despite the loss tonight they still clinch the division title because that magic number was one. so what that meant was even if the nationals lose the game as long as the braves lose, then they're in and that's what happened tonight in the middle of the 9th tonight the braves losing the game in pittsburgh 2- 1 and the crowd went crazy. let's show you what happened out here today in this game. we pick it up, john lannan on the hill for the nats tonight top of the 2nd no score. two on, one out. one is driven to the gap in a deep left center. bryce harper gives chase but cannot make the catch, crashes

into the wall. one run scores, ball rolls along the track into the left field. second run scores. the phillies take a 2-0 lead. bottom of the 6th, still 2-0, michael morse with a runner on, two outs, full count. kyle kendricks strikes him out. the end of the inning kendrick goes. in laroche is up and goes down, so opportunities missed in this one. they fall 2-0 the final, but it's not going wipe any smiles off the faces here. very no idea where my camera guy is. i'm sure he's right in the middle of the celebration, but it's absolute pandemonium out here on the field. obviously everybody is smiling. gio gonzalez right here as you can see. >> we're looking at pictures right now. we were just seeing pictures when they were inside when the champagne started coming down. you said it was kind of cool because the players came back out onto the field to share

with nats fans themselves. >> reporter: absolutely. they wanted to share this moment with this fan base. they that know they've been through a lot and they're certainly doing that. all this celebration typically happens inside the confines of a locker room, but gio gonzalez is a potential cy young candidate was the first one out of the dugout. he came out here, celebrated, d a beer in hand, threw it up in the air and bryce harper soon followed, but now the entire team is on the field really embracing this one with the fans. what an occasion. >> you have been covering sports for quite some time. have you ever seen a situation like this before where the team lost the game, but the entire stadium is celebrating like never before? r before >> reporter: it's pretty neat, isn't it? i guess if you wanted to script it, a win would have worked, but i don't think it matters to these guys. it's the body of work they've put together over the course of this season. right now they have baseball's best record and they can hold onto that. they're trying to get homefield advantage in the playoffs, obviously two more games to go.

cincinnati reds have the other best record in the national league. as long as the nats can have that, they can have homefield advantage in the playoffs. it's a special occasion at nationals park. the fans have not gone anywhere. >> as we look in the stands behind you, it looks like it is still packed. >> reporter: it is. look for yourself. all the fans have stayed in their seats and they're in for a treat. i guess this is kind of extra innings in essence. >> extra deserved innings for sure. any idea how long the celebrations will continue there tonight? >> reporter: absolutely. i don't think the party is going away any time soon. it looks like they're just kind of getting started. they still have two more games in the regular season and then they'll get a couple days off and really enjoy this one, but despite the loss this is going to be one that they're not going to forget any time soon. it's a special evening. >> i don't think any nats fan will forget this loss and win

drizzle, but let's go over to sentinel radar because there will be a little bit more later tonight. we'll have trace amounts to a few 1 hundredths, but watch down to our south. we've got a warm front on the move, later tonight some of that heavier rain over the carolinas and i mean more showers rather than drizzle. that may be around for the morning commute. sometime that does slow thing down a little bit. might want to pack that umbrella for tomorrow, too. overnight we're dropping to 61 degrees. that is not cold. it will be very warm at the ballpark where no one is going anywhere in a big hurry, clouds and showers in the forecast overnight, probably a little damp for some of you in the morning commute and a bit of fog in the overnight hours. we've got a warm front that will start moving through the area tomorrow and as it is doing that, it will promote more rods of showers and maybe, just maybe, a rumble of thunder for some of you during the day tomorrow. we'll keep an eye on all that, but a great night in d.c. it

our breaking news continues on this monday night. you can see some of the nats players excited. they are the nl east champions. here's how it went down tonight. the nats versus the phillies at home. the nats lose that game, but late in the 9th we find out that the pirates beat the atlanta braves and with that the win for the nats, historic for washington sports. our coverage will continue throughout the evening. we have bob barnard there with

fans and our sports director scott smith getting interviews, at least trying to, with all this champagne flying there right now. i think he's got bryce harper's goggles. scott does. he may be putting them on right now so he can get his job done. we'll continue with this throughout the evening. another big story, an unusual string of violent days in frederick, maryland. the crime strike includes the city's first year. someone shot and killed lamont george lee elohist early sunday morning. tonight more gun fire -- ellis early this morning. tonight more gunfire and fox 5 was on the scene. >> reporter: a lot going on in a short amount of time. the street violence broke out shortly after we arrived here in frederick about 5:30. we were talking to a police lieutenant about sunday's murder when all of a sudden you could hear gunshots fired from close by and then about an hour ago a vigil for lamont ellis.

>> in the name of jesus, amen. >> reporr: lamont ellis had a lot of friends. they showed up to pay tribute to him in mullinex alley where he was found dead 2:30 sunday morning. his girl friend and children were at the vigil. ellis was remembered as the manager of the seafood department at a gaithersburg giants supermarket. >> he was a wonderful friend and a good father, had a big heart. he will be missed. >> he was a good guy, never bothered nobody ever. all he did was smile. >> reporter: his friend think he was the victim of a robbery, that somebody asked him for money and killed him when he said he didn't have any. police are still investigating. >> we're actually backtracking everywhere our victim may have been that night, people he may have spoken to, contacts he may have had. at this point we don't have a

motive we're ready to release. we have different theories. >> reporter: then while we were talking to lieutenant pennington shots rang out. police cars raced to a scene. a few blocks away west south street near center street people in the area said a huge brawl broke out in the street. >> it was a mess. it was chaos. there was at lease 20 people there and they had -- least 20 people there and they had five or six of them started to break out in a fight and everybody started to join in. >> reporter: some of those people she said ran into a nearby house. somebody started firing a weapon. police at last check were still combing some neighborhoods trying to piece this all together, figure out what's going on. at least one stabbing victim was taken to the hospital, said to be in serious but stable condition. all of this very unusual for frederick which had only two homicides last year. the killing of lamont ellis was the first and only homicide so

far this year. back in to you, will. >> thanks for the update. tomorrow marks 10 years since the d.c. sniper attacks began. 10 people were killed, three others hurt during the shooting spree. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were eventually captured and convicted, muhammad executed in want 9. malvo is serving a life sentence. lee boyd malvo is 27 years old now. the killer did an interview with the washington post recently. he calls himself a monster, says he's remorseful and admits there is no way to properly convey an apology to the victims' families. >> i was a monster. if you look up the definition, i mean that's what a monster is. i was a ghoul. i was a thief. i stole people's lives. i mean what am i going to tell them? i'm sorry i murdered your only child. i'm sorry i killed your husband.

i'm sorry i murdered your wife. what do i tell the child who was waiting for his father to come home and his dad never showed up? >> one of malvo and muhammad's victims was this woman, 25-year- old lori rivera. i spoke with her husband nelson a short time ago this evening. here's some of that conversation. >> we're going to be victims for the rest of our life. >> reporter: do you forgive him? >> he's going to pay for what he did. i'm not a guy to forgive him. >> you've heard the interview. do you feel there is a sense of remorse from lee boyd malvo? >> not really because you hear sometimes in the back, you know, he's just going to smile and i don't believe what he was saying. i don't believe that at all. i didn't feel anything remorse from him. >> reporter: let me wrap up with this. as i understand, you've moved

feeling? >> well, we're closer there than i've ever been in my lifetime. >> reporter: congrats. thanks very much. that tells it all. we've got some little ones here who were in the stadium. what did you think of that game? >> good. >> reporter: who won tonight? >> washington! >> reporter: yes. oh, my goodness. tell me what was that like tonight. >> it was great. it was a good game. it was fun to watch. we still got a road ahead of us. we're going to keep working hard. >> reporter: the nats lost tonight if you're just joining us 2-0, but up in pittsburgh pittsburgh beat the braves, so it kind of backed in. does that matter to you? >> it feels good to get a division title. we win a couple more games, first place is real good. homefield advantage in the playoffs in about two weeks. >> reporter: she down here is a little more tired. i'll let you be, but let me ask you, sir, wearing the redskins hat. this is a redskins town and

everybody talking about rocking the red with the capitals. how big is this, the washington nationals going to the playoffs? >> i think it's huge because last year this time we weren't even considering making the playoffs and for us to win the east this year is just amazing to me. so i think it will be amazing for the city for us to bring possibly a pennant to the city. so i'm excited. as you can see, the kids are excited. >> reporter: can you give me another fist pump? yes. oh, man. melt my heart. thank you guys for sticking around. there are people still inside. most have left, but we knew last week they were going to the playoffs, but now nl east champions. people are having to pinch themselves. >> it is incredible. how did the announcement come down at national park? this occurred i understand the pirates winning over atlanta in the 9th inning of the nats game, right? >> reporter: exactly. it was at 9:44 p.m. i was in there with my iphone watching it. we may be able to show you that

at 11:00. what people were doing was it was the top of the 9th and the nats were down 2-0 and so when the phillies -- they got the phillies out and between the top and bottom of the 9th they had the scoreboard up there showing all the other national league games. we could see there were two outs in the top of the 9th, the braves trying to win in pittsburgh down 2-0 and so we're waiting to see out no. 3 or the f final in pittsburgh, but it went away. the big scene switched to something else, but i think enough people were watching on their phones and hearing on their radios that the pirates won and the place went bananas. so it was between the top and bottom of the 9th inning the place went crazy. they're still going crazy and it's a good half hour, 45 minutes in. so that's how it happened. the announcement went through the crowd soon after everybody learning that the pirates had beaten the braves in pittsburgh and then they put it up on the screen nl east champions.

it was pretty awesome. >> are we talking about hundreds of people still inside or thousands? >> reporter: absolutely thousands. i don't know if you're seeing the big scene, guys are wearing goggles to keep the champagne out of their eyes. those are the nats players live in their locker room, but down here i would say there are a good thousands of people still in there. they're still celebrating, most of them sober, thank goodness, and very happy tonight. look at this guy. is this one of those new sweat shirts or no? >> not a new one, sorry. >> reporter: but they're selling them already. >> there's huge lines inside for shirts. >> reporter: so they're asking if there are hundreds or thousands of people in there. i'm probably saying thousands and a lot of them in line. >> they're in line buying merchandise. >> reporter: back to you guys. >> nice job out there, bob. thank you. get us a couple shirts. we'll take you back inside nats park right now. sports director scott smith is standing by with one of the

phenoms for the nationals, bryce harper. >> reporter: i've got something with me that may have some stake in this one right here, bryce harper enjoying the nl east title. you guys run out and come celebrate with the fans. what's this moment like for you? >> it's unbelievable. these fans have been waiting all year. we're so happy to give it to them, this city and this town. you can hear them now. winner is better than losing, of course, but there's no worries. >> reporter: the fact that they're still hanging around as if there's extra innings watching this kind of play out in front of their eyes. this city is so playoff baseball starved. you delivered and give it to them so quickly in your career. did you have any idea it would happen like this? >> two years ago when i got drafted, i knew we were going to have a great team. we had a great organization. we had strasburg, werth, zimmerman, a great staff, great group of guys. i thought we were going to win

definitely. i had no doubt. i want to win for this town and city. >> reporter: i know it's kind of weird to celebrate coming off the heels of a loss, but you're watching the scoreboard. i'm sure you know what's going on. this crowd cheers in the middle of the 9th when the atlanta braves go down. your thoughts at that point? >> the braves have been playing great all year. our whole nl east has been unbelievable, but to be able to come out on top and really enjoy this with everybody and sit back and let it able and enjoy this with everybody and the fans, our team, mike rizzo, the lerners, this is unbelievable. >> reporter: i'm sure you guys are ready to go into the postseason. >> that's our main goal. we'll be kissing that gold trophy with the flags on it and really trying to win that for them. >> reporter: good stuff, bryce. well deserved. take care. there you have it, the face of

10:00. president obama and mitt romney stayed behind close dooreds today each practicing for the upcoming presidential debate. tonight there's a fresh poll out of george washington university and politico. it shows while the president remains out front mitt romney has a real chance to cut into his lead. fox 5's tom fitzgerald reports. >> at the university of denver preparations are underway for the first presidential debate on wednesday. >> i'm willing to do more. >> after the campaigns focused on virginia last week by monday both were into full debate prep mode with the president in nevada and mitt romney in boss on. >> if i become president -- no. when i become president of the united states. >> but the new politico george washington university battle ground poll shows president obama leading mitt romney 49- 47% nationally among likely voters. >> it's a tight race, a very tight race. >> mark kennedy, director of gw's graduate school of

political management says while the race is close, there are bright spots for romney. the poll asked who would do a better job on budgeting and spending. romney beat the president 50- 43%. >> when it gets down to the ballot itself, although he's ahead still on the most important issue in people's minds, he's still behind overall largely because of that likability factor. >> but on which candidate would stand up for the middle class, the poll found the president won 51- 43% over romney, but kennedy says the president still needs to make his case to close the deal. >> i think the thing that obama needs to accomplish is he needs to show people he has a plan for how to grow the economy. >> while the campaigns are downplaying debate expectations -- >> government romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> he needs to give the american people the choice that we're offering. >> what's not debating is the

where people were watching and then i think in 1976 in terms of a major gaffe when gerald ford who the president, hadn't been elected, richard nixon resigned, said that there was no domination by the soviet union of eastern europe. those are the two highlights, but that's a very rare occasion where a debate actually determines an election. >> let me ask you about this. both candidates seem to be praising each other lowering debate expectations. we're hearing mitt romney has been rehearsing zingers. the president has been rehearsing delivering shorter answers in this debate. what does each man need to do to convince the american public he's the right man for the job. let's start with president obama. >> president obama needs to just look presidential, not look flustered, not give any lines like hillary, you're likeable enough which seemed to demonstrate a certain arrogance or smugness or putting down anybody else. mitt romney has to be aggressive and has to make points and has to come off as

knowledgeable, supposedly in 1994 he doesn't do well with followup questions because he feels he's already given an answer. that was when he was debating ted kennedy. it's everything for romney to gain by doing well and obama just needs to be steady and look, as i said, presidential and not make any mistakes and not have romney get under his skin and say something which demonstrates that obama is flustered in any way. >> it's been a while since the president has had a debate like this. do you think romney has an edge having been through 19 debates in the primaries? >> yeah. he's had more practice, but it's interesting in the washington abc news poll, the people that responded to that poll 51-33 said that obama was going to win the debate. >> last but not least, the most

who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it... and they will vote for this president no matter what... and so my job is not to worry about those people. i'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. a new parking plan for d.c. would reserve about 10% of all

meters for disabled drivers. it's also expected to cut down on fraud. the new effort comes after a lot of you complained about the red top meters, that program suspended and now as fox 5's matt ackland shows us, there's a new plan to consider. >> reporter: it was supposed to solve all of the problems, new red top meters would reserve spots for the disabled and stop the abuse of the city's old free disabled parking policy, but soon after it started the council shut it down. there was mass confusion. >> the program got off to what we can characterize as a fairly rocky start. >> reporter: many complained there were simply not enough red tops, but now a plan introduced by council member mary cheh would make 1,800 of the district's 18,800-meter spots red top disabled parking only. >> all 1,800 red top meters will be installed at the end of blocks nearest to the curbsides.

>> reporter: fraud was one reason for the reform. remember a fox 5 investigation exposed those who appeared to be using disabled parking placards to park free all day. the district followed up with its own camera investigation. >> we've had a problem. some able-bodied drivers have abused the district's current disabled parking system by fraudulently displaying handicapped placards on their dashboards in order not to pay parking meter fees. >> reporter: but is 10% of all meter parking spots in the district too much? officials say there are over 160,000 people living in d.c. who are disabled and many more who travel into the city each day. >> the mayor's mission is to make sure we are a national model of accessibility. we are to represent what other states should be replicating is very important to the administration. it's the right thing to do. >> at this point the red top policy is not enforced. currently there are about 450 red top meters on the streets in d.c. there are many more

no matter what the weather here in d.c. so yes, we're starting with the nationals and giving them a hearty congratulations from all of us at fox 5 and for the whole city, nl east champions, a few sprinkles out there tonight. i did see the umbrellas going up but nothing that caused a big problem. more of the same tomorrow, clouds and showers around. i think your morning commute could be a little wet. we do not have a lot right now. we have drizzle or mist and occasionally a little bit more light rain like what you see coming through prince william county and fauquier county. there will be more. down to the south we have a warm front lifting north. it's going to drag up some of this moisture, too. initially some of it might skew more to the west of d.c. for the commute it might be a little wet. we won't be cold overnight. it's 65 degrees now. most places will stay near 60 that. could mean a little fog later tonight in between the light rain, mist and showers we are expecting off and on overnight.

65 will be your overnight low in quantico, 56 for winchester, 61 for hagerstown, drive and showers, a patch or two of -- drizzle and showers, a patch or two of fog. 75 degrees tomorrow. there could be some clouds, showers and maybe even a rumble of thunder in the afternoon. our futurecast is suggesting there could be a couple rumbles around even in the morning. so 8 a.m., 63 degrees with clouds and showers. by noon we'll have a shower or thunderstorm possible, temperature 71 and by 5:00 showers and storms with the temperature of 74 degrees. again at the surface we have a warm front coming through. as that lifts north, we'll be a little unstable. that could trigger a few thunderstorms. on wednesday as this low moves north, the cool front swings on through. i think that will happen fairly early in the morning. we'll have morning showers wednesday and then the rain will cut off. it will still be a warm day, maybe at or above 80 wednesday

and pretty warm tomorrow with a temperature of 75. last stop here the futurecast. notice at 7:00 in the morning maybe some heavy rain riding up from southwest to northeast, especially d.c. into maryland. so a wetter commute perhaps there than you may have in virginia. through the afternoon we go and start seeing a few more showers developing. wednesday morning a little bit more. that will be it. so we're really thinking we get maybe 1/4 to a 1/2-inch of rain tomorrow and then it's out of here a few days. here's your fox 5 weather acquisition cue forecast. temperature tomorrow 70 -- accuweather forecast. temperature tomorrow 75. most of wednesday is really nice. thursday and friday both look terrific. look at friday, 82 degrees. i need a couple more warm days. >> me, too. i'm not quite ready to turn the corner yet. >> same. for the weekend saturday dry. right now we think sunday might have a couple of showers. good stuff. a lot still ahead.
